WHY IT MATTERS
Menstrual care is about more than access to a product.
Period poverty affects access to menstrual products, appropriate sanitation and hygiene facilities, and stigma-free menstrual education. It can affect education, work, health, dignity and participation in everyday life.
Reported prevalence of period poverty in Ireland in available research reviewed in “Tackling Period Poverty in the EU”.
Research across Europe shows that people experiencing period poverty may face difficult trade-offs, inadequate facilities, stigma, gaps in menstrual education and barriers to participating fully in school, work and social life.
